The production process is commonly understood as the whole of actions aimed at transforming the starting materials and raw materials into finished products. Semi-finished product – a significant part of the final product
The goal of all activities undertaken during the production process is to launch a ready product on the market using materials, semi-finished products, parts or assemblies. In the semi-finished machining process, the so-called finishing allowance is removed, i.e. the layer of material to be cut from the blank to obtain the surface of the object with the expected quality parameters. The degree of machining – expected as a precise and loss-free material – depends on the requirements of the designer regarding the accuracy of the workmanship and surface roughness. It must take into account, first and foremost, such data as: the geometry and technological characteristics of the finished item, the production program of the product and the production program of a specific part of the final product.
No technological process can be developed without a semi-product project, i.e. a semi-finished product – an infinite product intended for resale or for further processing. The designer’s task is to choose the material suited to the planned structure, as well as economic and technological requirements. An important hint for him is also the production volume. In semi-finished products, semi-finished products can be created in any way that takes into account the cost and specificity of raw materials, and as a result also the economics of the entire production process. In the case of aluminum components, structural adhesives are used, and in the case of steel components characterized by different dimensions, the welding method is used.
Types of semi-finished products
While executing the project, the designer determines the technological type of the object, the type of blank, surpluses for the surface treatment stages of the object, as well as the geometric shape and dimensions of the blank. The type of semi-finished product, i.e. its form and the method of its implementation, are very important. All necessary details should be shown in the executive drawing. Thanks to computer programs, you can precisely select and calculate machining allowances for items belonging to the technological type. The selection of the right blank is of fundamental technological importance, and its type depends, among other things, on the production volume. In series production, among others, castings and ferrule are used, while in unit production an important role is given to welded and glued semi-finished products. The production uses laser or water cutting as well as 3D printing.
The most general classification includes among semi-finished products: metallurgical materials, castings, forgings and patterns as well as plastics. As a result of hot plastic forming, among others, semi-finished products such as:
rolled rods with a circular, square, rectangular and hexagonal cross-section;
sheets, pipes, profiles (angles, channel sections, tees, drawn products).
An important part of the technological product, however, are also semi-finished products made of plastics, and thus blanks, elements produced by cold forming. Among them are blanks and extrudates, as well as semi-finished products made by metallurgy of metal, metal-ceramic powders and plastics, i.e. shapes and moldings. In the construction of machines, forgings characteristic of unit production are also used – shafts, cubes, discs, discs, sleeves, cylinders, as well as off-molded and matrix forgings characteristic of serial production, in particular mass production. The semi-finished products are welded, welded and soldered. Forged production and castings are useful in mass production.
